Genetic testing
Genetic testing, in plain terms.
I can order two kinds of genetic tests. Neither is needed for everyone.
Test one
Medication gene testing
I’m registered with GeneSight and can order a test kit to be sent to your home.
Your body uses enzymes in the liver (the cytochrome P450 family) to break down many medications. Depending on your genes, you may have more of this activity or less, which changes how much of a medication ends up in your body.
Who it can help
People who have tried several medications or had unusual reactions.
A guide, not the final word
Even if a medication comes back “in the red,” you may still be able to take it. It just means you may need a different dose.
Not for everyone
This testing isn’t necessary for most people, and it can be expensive. Please don’t over-interpret the results.
Test two
MTHFR
You probably know your brain needs serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine to work properly. To make these neurotransmitters, it needs vitamin B9 in its active form, L-methylfolate.
- StartVitamin B9
- The enzymeMTHFRconverts B9
- Active formL-methylfolate
- Brain chemicalsSerotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine
Most people convert B9 without trouble. Some have a common variant in the MTHFR gene that makes the enzyme work less well, and a simple cheek swab can tell you.
The test
$65
I can order an at-home MTHFR cheek swab test for you.
If you have a deficiency
If you want a more economical option than prescription Deplin, which costs over $200 a month, I can point you to L-methylfolate supplements I recommend. Please check with me before starting, especially if you take other medications.
